Customer Profile

Cummins

Cummins, Inc. is a corporation of complementary business units that design, manufacture, distribute, and service engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions, and electrical power generation systems. Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana (USA), Cummins employs approximately 40,000 people worldwide and serves customers in close to 190 countries and territories through a network of more than 600 company-owned and independent distributor locations and approximately 6,000 dealer locations. Cummins earned $1.0 billion on sales of $13.2 billion in 2010.

Problem:
Cummins is currently running multiple versions of Oracle® E-Business Suite (EBS), ranging from 10.7 all the way up to 12.1.1, with most instances running 11.5.10. The company is in the process of upgrading many sites to Oracle Release 12 (R12).

With so many versions of EBS within Cummins, joining the various tables is very difficult, prohibiting end users from accessing information required for reporting purposes.

Once the application upgrade is done, we simply regenerate the views and upgrade them to the latest version. That is what gives us the upgrade protection piece that Noetix is so famous for.

Solution:
"Typically, reporting is the last thing people look at during an implementation," said Srini Chavali, Director, Enterprise Database and Tools, Cummins, Inc. "Then, on the day of go-live you hear, 'Where are my reports?'" To solve this issue, Cummins uses Noetix and Oracle® Discoverer. Noetix® Generator provides an end user layer that enables nontechnical end users to easily build reports that automatically power-up the Discoverer tool.

"Noetix provides a quick and easy way to give end users access to data without too much hassle in terms of trying to find out what the base tables are about," said Chavali.

During forthcoming upgrades to Oracle R12, Cummins will leverage Noetix as the foundation for their reporting needs to streamline access to Oracle application data during the implementation phase and to provide ongoing report protection against data structure changes inherent in upgrades.

Result:
"Reporting is always a challenge because there are so many stakeholders trying to get the information out of Oracle, especially EBS," said Chavali. "Noetix provides a very stable and compact platform on which to run the reports."

With NoetixViews®, Cummins' end users don't need to worry about how to join the various tables in the applications to get to their data - they just look at the business terminology within the views and pull out the data that they want.
